Measurements are typically conducted during stages of active vegetative growth. An optimal LAI ensures efficient light capture across the entire canopy without causing excessive shading of lower leaves. Low values indicate underutilization of the field's resource potential, while excessively high indices can promote disease proliferation and reduce canopy ventilation.

A common mistake is assessing canopy development without considering the crop's specific growth stage. Over-reliance on maximizing leaf area can lead to excessive water loss via transpiration, which is particularly detrimental during drought conditions when water conservation becomes the primary priority.
