Cation exchange is a vital soil property that dictates nutrient retention and availability. Soil particles such as clay and organic matter carry a negative charge, which attracts and holds essential cations like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and ammonium, preventing them from leaching out of the root zone.
Understanding this process helps in managing soil fertility effectively. When a plant takes up nutrients, the soil complex releases stored cations back into the soil solution, ensuring a continuous supply. Soils with a higher Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) can store more nutrients, providing a buffer against rapid nutrient depletion.
A common mistake is applying large doses of fertilizer to soils with low CEC, such as sandy soils, without considering the risk of leaching. In these conditions, nutrients are easily lost to deeper soil layers before the plants can access them.
