Root exudates

These are organic compounds released by plant roots into the soil, creating a nutrient-rich environment for beneficial soil microorganisms.

Также говорят: rhizodeposits, root secretions, root exudation

Root exudates consist of sugars, amino acids, organic acids, and vitamins that support the complex ecosystem of the rhizosphere. By modulating these secretions, plants establish symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungi and nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which significantly improve nutrient uptake and enhance plant immunity against soil-borne pathogens.

In agricultural practice, farmers enhance these processes by utilizing biological fertilizers and stimulants that support healthy microbial communities during early growth stages. Proper soil structure, consistent oxygen levels, and moderate moisture are essential to maintain active exudation, which ultimately dictates the efficiency of nutrient mineralisation.

A common mistake is the over-application of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, which can disrupt the communication between roots and microorganisms. Excessive soil compaction also restricts root aeration, leading to a decline in exudation and a subsequent reduction in natural soil fertility.
