Land reclamation

Land reclamation is the process of improving land productivity by modifying its physical, chemical, or biological properties to optimize conditions for agricultural crops.

Также говорят: land improvement, soil amelioration, land development

The primary goal of land reclamation is to transform marginal, low-productivity, or degraded soils into fertile land capable of supporting sustainable agricultural production. It helps mitigate limiting factors such as excessive water, nutrient deficiency, soil acidity, or aridity, ensuring better crop development.

Common practices include drainage, irrigation, liming, and soil stabilization. Effective reclamation requires precise planning based on soil mapping and environmental assessments. A major mistake is implementing large-scale infrastructure without understanding local hydrological cycles, which can lead to severe soil erosion or the depletion of natural groundwater reserves.
