Starter fertilizer
This is the application of mineral fertilizers directly into the seed furrow or rows during sowing to provide essential nutrients to young seedlings.
Также говорят: pop-up fertilizer, in-furrow application
Starter fertilizer provides young plants with readily available nutrients during the critical early stages of growth when the root system is still limited. The main purpose is to accelerate uniform germination and stimulate the development of primary roots.
This method is widely used for various crops that are sensitive to early-stage nutrient deficiencies, especially phosphorus. Fertilizers are typically placed near the seed at a specific depth and offset to avoid direct contact with the seed embryo.
A common mistake is applying too high a concentration of salts in the germination zone, which can cause chemical injury to the seeds and reduce emergence. It is crucial to maintain proper distance between the fertilizer and the seed and to consider soil moisture levels.
