Reseeding (gap filling)

An agronomic practice of sowing additional seeds in areas with thin or failed emergence to achieve the optimal plant population density.

Также говорят: gap filling, stand repair, patch sowing

Reseeding is essential when poor stand establishment occurs due to crusting, pest damage, or environmental stress. By filling the gaps, farmers ensure uniform crop development, which is critical for maximizing light interception and optimizing nutrient uptake across the entire field.

This operation should be performed immediately after identifying the gaps. It is crucial to use the same seed variety to ensure uniform maturity at harvest time. A common mistake is delaying the repair, which creates competition between older and younger plants, often resulting in uneven growth and difficulties during mechanical harvesting.
