Severity of infection

A metric representing the extent or intensity of disease or pest damage on crops within a field.

Также говорят: disease severity, infestation level, pest incidence, damage intensity

The severity of infection is a critical indicator for effective crop protection management. By quantifying how much of the plant tissue is affected, agronomists can determine whether the economic threshold has been reached and if an immediate application of pesticides is necessary.

Assessments are conducted by sampling plants across different areas of the field to ensure representative data. Using standardized rating scales or visual percentage estimation, the agronomist records the damage level. This data is essential for tracking the spread of a pathogen and evaluating the efficacy of previous treatments.

A common mistake is failing to account for the crop growth stage, as the impact of an infection varies significantly throughout the season. Furthermore, relying on visual inspection without proper randomization across the field often leads to inaccurate data that does not reflect the actual status of the entire crop.
