Grain aeration

This is the process of forcing air through a grain bulk to reduce its temperature, remove excess moisture, and prevent spoilage during storage.

Также говорят: grain ventilation, crop aeration

Aeration is used to maintain grain quality by cooling the bulk, which inhibits the growth of fungi, bacteria, and insects. By passing ambient air through the grain, operators can manage the heat generated by biological activity.

The practice is most effective when performed during cooler night hours or low-humidity days. Key factors include the airflow rate and the duration of operation, which must be adjusted based on the initial moisture content and external environmental conditions.

Common mistakes involve aerating grain when ambient relative humidity is too high, which can unintentionally re-wet the product, or failing to ensure uniform airflow distribution through the entire storage volume.
