Ground elder

Ground elder (lat. Aegopodium podagraria) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. In agronomy, this species is classified as a persistent rhizomatous perennial weed, distinguished by an extremely high capacity for vegetative propagation and rapid expansion across new areas.

This weed is widely distributed in forest and forest-steppe zones, preferring moist and fertile soils. Ground elder is commonly found in gardens, vegetable patches, backyards, and it also infests perennial grass stands, berry plantations, and shelterbelts, forming dense colonies that crowd out cultivated plants.

The biology of the plant is characterized by a long, creeping, branched rhizome located in the upper soil layer at a depth of 5–20 cm. Early in the spring, aerial shoots develop from the buds on the rhizomes. The plant possesses high shade tolerance, which allows it to successfully thrive in shaded conditions inaccessible to many other weeds.

The harmfulness of ground elder lies in its aggressive suppression of cultivated crops through the formation of thick vegetation cover. The root system of the weed absorbs significant amounts of nutrients and moisture, rapidly depleting the soil. Furthermore, ground elder serves as a reservoir for various pests and pathogens that can spread to agricultural crops.

Effective control of ground elder requires a complex approach.

• Regular deep digging with careful removal of all rhizome fragments.
• Application of exhaustion methods for the root system through systematic cutting of the aerial parts.
• Soil mulching with opaque materials.
• Utilization of systemic herbicides based on glyphosate for treating fields before sowing or in non-selective areas.
