Calotropis gigantea
Calotropis gigantea
Description
Calotropis gigantea, commonly known as giant milkweed, belongs to the Apocynaceae family. This perennial shrub is recognized as a significant weed in tropical agricultural systems, known for its extreme resilience and ability to colonize marginal lands, abandoned fields, and pasture areas rapidly.
The plant is widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia, where it frequently interferes with crop production. It is often found in sugarcane fields, cotton plantations, and near irrigation infrastructure, where it competes aggressively for water and essential soil nutrients, often outperforming local crop species.
Biologically, the plant is characterized by a deep taproot and thick, leathery leaves covered in a waxy bloom. It produces a milky latex containing toxic cardiac glycosides, which serves as a deterrent to most herbivores. Seed dispersal is highly efficient, as wind carries the tufted seeds over significant distances, leading to rapid colonisation.
The weed's impact is multidimensional: it restricts crop growth through resource depletion and allelopathic effects. Furthermore, it poses a direct danger to livestock due to its toxicity. For farmers, it represents a labor-intensive challenge as the plant's rigid, woody stems and irritating latex make mechanical removal difficult and painful for manual laborers.
Control strategies require a persistent approach. A combination of mechanical removal — specifically extracting the entire taproot — and the application of systemic herbicides is essential. Due to the waxy leaf cuticle, applying herbicides requires the use of specialized surfactants to ensure effective absorption into the plant's vascular system, particularly during the vegetative growth stage.
- Deep cultivation to disrupt root systems
- Spot spraying with systemic, non-selective herbicides
- Manual removal of young plants before they reach maturity
- Integrated weed management focusing on habitat modification
