Field cudweed (lat. Filago arvensis) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is typically classified as an early spring weed. This plant is easily recognized by its grayish, woolly appearance caused by dense pubescence on its stems and leaves, which helps it adapt to arid environmental conditions.
This weed is commonly found throughout temperate regions across Europe and Asia. It thrives in sandy, dry, and poor soils, frequently appearing in cereal crops, fallow lands, and on the edges of agricultural fields. Its ability to colonize disturbed soil makes it a persistent nuisance in various cropping systems, particularly in regions with sandy soil profiles.
