Broom snakeweed

Broom snakeweed (Gutierrezia sarothrae) is a perennial subshrub belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is recognized as a significant noxious weed, particularly in arid and semi-arid landscapes. The plant is distinguished by its broom-like appearance, consisting of numerous slender stems and linear leaves coated in a sticky resin that helps it conserve moisture.

This species is primarily found throughout the western plains and desert regions of North America. It frequently invades rangelands and grasslands, where it competes aggressively with native forage grasses. Its ability to thrive in degraded soils makes it a dominant colonizer in areas where natural vegetation cover has been disturbed or overgrazed.

The biology of the plant is centered on its deep, extensive root system, which allows it to withstand extreme drought conditions. It reproduces primarily through wind-dispersed seeds produced in large quantities during late summer and autumn. These seeds can remain viable in the soil for several years, ensuring the plant’s long-term persistence in the ecosystem.

Broom snakeweed poses a dual threat to agriculture: it reduces the grazing capacity of lands by outcompeting desirable forage and contains saponins that are toxic to livestock. Consumption by cattle, sheep, and goats can lead to severe poisoning, reduced weight gain, and reproductive issues, including abortion in pregnant animals.

Management and control require an integrated approach to be effective. Key strategies include:

• Prescribed burning or mowing to reduce biomass before seed set.
