Marsh elder

Marsh elder (Iva xanthiifolia) is an annual herbaceous weed belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is recognized for its robust growth, reaching heights of up to 2 meters. This plant is a strong competitor in agricultural systems, thriving in disturbed soils and acting as a significant nuisance in managed fields throughout temperate regions.

This weed is most commonly found in row crops, such as corn, sunflower, and sugar beet, as well as in waste areas and along roadsides. Because of its ability to adapt to various soil types and environmental conditions, it has become a widespread agricultural concern, often invading highly fertile farmland and reducing the profitability of agricultural operations.

The biology of Iva xanthiifolia is defined by its prolific seed production. A single plant can produce hundreds of thousands of seeds, which can remain viable in the soil for several years. The seeds germinate early in the season, allowing the weed to establish a significant height advantage over emerging crops, which is crucial for its subsequent dominance in the field.

The damage caused by marsh elder is primarily due to nutrient and water competition. Because it grows much faster and larger than many crops, it quickly shades the field, depriving crop seedlings of essential sunlight. In addition to yield losses, the plant is known to cause severe allergic reactions in humans due to its wind-borne pollen, making it a health hazard for farm workers during its flowering season.
