Indian lettuce

Indian lettuce (Latin Lactuca indica) belongs to the Asteraceae family. This perennial herbaceous plant is classified as a persistent rhizomatous weed. Possessing a vigorous root system, it is capable of rapidly colonizing large areas, creating severe competition with crops for space, water, and essential nutrients.

This species is primarily found in temperate and subtropical regions, actively spreading across agricultural fields, roadsides, irrigation ditches, and abandoned farmland. Indian lettuce causes the greatest damage to cereal crops, vegetables, and perennial grasses by infiltrating their root zones and exhausting soil fertility.

The biology of this weed is characterized by a remarkable regeneration ability. Even small root fragments remaining in the soil after mechanical tillage are capable of producing new shoots. The plant spreads both vegetatively and through seeds, which are equipped with pappi, allowing them to be carried by the wind over long distances to infest new areas.

The harmfulness of the weed lies not only in mechanical suppression but also in its strong allelopathic effect. Root exudates from Indian lettuce can negatively impact soil microbial life and inhibit the growth of surrounding crops. Furthermore, the dense foliage creates significant shading, leading to reduced yields and lower quality of harvested agricultural products.

Effective management requires a comprehensive strategy. Agronomic measures include deep plowing with moldboard inversion and systematic root cutting during the active growing season to deplete nutrient reserves in the rhizomes. Chemical control involves the application of systemic herbicides capable of translocating into the root system. Recommended practices include:

• Implementing crop rotation with competitive cover crops.
• Using glyphosate-based herbicides in fallow fields.
• Prompt removal of weed patches before the onset of flowering and seed dispersal.
• Application of selective herbicides within grain crop fields.
