It is recognized globally as a significant threat to freshwater ecosystems and agricultural water infrastructure, characterized by its rapid growth rate and high adaptability to various water depths and nutrient levels.

The biology of the plant centers on its submerged growth habit. It forms dense, tangled mats that completely occupy the water column. The plant propagates primarily through vegetative fragmentation, where small pieces of broken stems drift with water currents, root themselves in new substrates, and establish dense monoculture colonies within a short period.

In agricultural contexts, this species is notorious for infesting irrigation canals and reservoirs. Its primary harm lies in physically blocking water flow and clogging intake valves, which significantly disrupts water supply chains to farmlands. This results in decreased hydraulic efficiency and increased operational costs for maintaining irrigation networks.
