While it is cultivated as a cereal grain, it acts as a persistent and aggressive weed in other crop systems, where its volunteer populations can mimic the behavior of wild invasive grasses, causing significant agronomic challenges.
This weed is commonly found in fields of row crops, particularly corn, sunflowers, and sugar beets. It thrives in well-aerated, warm soils and is highly competitive, often establishing itself early in the growing season, which allows it to overshadow and deprive young crop seedlings of essential resources.
The biological cycle of Panicum miliaceum is characterized by rapid development and high seed production. A single plant can produce thousands of seeds that remain viable in the soil for several years. The seeds germinate in stages, making it difficult to achieve total control with a single herbicide application or mechanical pass.
