Description

Feather grass (Latin: Stipa pennata) is a perennial grass species from the Poaceae family. While ecologically significant in native steppes, it is often categorized as a problematic weed in agricultural landscapes, particularly in pastures and hay fields, where it aggressively crowds out more desirable forage species.

Botanically, it is characterized by its deep, fibrous root system and dense tussock formation. The plant grows in clumps with narrow, rolled leaves and striking feathery awns on its inflorescences. Its biological advantage lies in exceptional drought tolerance and its highly efficient seed dispersal mechanism, which allows it to colonize disturbed soils rapidly.

The harm caused by feather grass in agriculture is primarily related to livestock health. During the seed-setting phase, the sharp, needle-like awns can pierce the hides, eyes, and mouths of grazing animals. This causes painful injuries, reduces weight gain, and can lead to severe infections, making contaminated grazing areas hazardous for cattle and sheep.

Agronomic control mainly involves physical disruption of the established root clumps. Deep plowing is the most effective mechanical method, as it buries the plant material and prevents regrowth. In permanent pastures, intensive management practices such as early mowing before seed maturation are critical to stopping the spread of the weed across fields.

Chemical control usually relies on non-selective herbicides, particularly glyphosate, used in spot treatments on non-crop lands. On productive lands, management focuses on strengthening the competitive ability of desirable grasses through fertilization and controlled grazing schedules. A healthy, well-managed turf is the best defense against the encroachment of feather grass.
