Fringed sandmat (scientific name Pectis ciliaris) belongs to the Asteraceae family. This herbaceous plant is widely recognized in agriculture as a problematic weed species. Known for its resilience in warm climates, it poses a persistent threat to crop health and agricultural productivity in various tropical and subtropical regions.

This weed is typically found in Latin America and the Caribbean, often thriving in fields of corn, beans, and vegetables. It also colonizes pastures and fallow land, taking advantage of open soil surfaces. Its presence is frequently noted in areas with intensive cultivation where soil disturbance allows for rapid germination of seeds stored in the soil bank.

The biology of Pectis ciliaris is characterized by a rapid life cycle. As an annual herb, it reproduces exclusively through seeds, which are highly mobile and can be dispersed by wind and equipment. The plant thrives under full sunlight and prefers well-drained, sandy soils, making it particularly aggressive in regions with prolonged dry spells interrupted by seasonal rainfall.
