Branched broomrape (Phelipanche ramosa) is a destructive parasitic plant belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. Lacking chlorophyll, this organism is entirely dependent on host plants for survival. It acts as an obligate parasite, connecting to the vascular system of the host crop to extract essential water, minerals, and carbohydrates necessary for its own growth and reproduction.

The species is widespread across Mediterranean climates, parts of Asia, and recently expanding into other temperate agricultural regions. It primarily targets dicotyledonous crops such as tomatoes, tobacco, sunflowers, hemp, and various legumes. Due to its high reproductive capacity, it is often classified as a serious quarantine weed in many countries.

The biological cycle of this plant is strictly synchronized with its host. Seeds remain dormant in the soil for several years and only germinate when specific chemical stimulants (strigolactones) are released by the host roots. Upon germination, the parasite develops a haustorium, a specialized organ that penetrates the host roots and establishes a direct physiological connection.

The economic impact of branched broomrape is severe. By redirecting the flow of nutrients from the crop to the parasite, it significantly stunts host growth, reduces overall biomass, and minimizes yield potential. In heavily infested fields, the total loss of harvest is a common outcome, making it one of the most challenging weeds to manage in intensive agriculture.

Management strategies require an integrated approach:

  • Implementing long-term crop rotation cycles using non-host crops like cereals or grasses.
  • Utilizing herbicide-tolerant crop varieties combined with appropriate chemistry for systemic control.
  • Employing soil solarization techniques in smaller, high-value vegetable production areas.
  • Applying trap crops to induce germination of broomrape seeds in the absence of a viable host.
  • Ensuring strict farm hygiene to prevent the spread of microscopic seeds via equipment or irrigation water.
