Amphibious bistort

Amphibious bistort (Polygonum amphibium) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Polygonaceae family. It is a highly adaptable weed known for its ability to grow in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Its persistent nature and ability to thrive in wet, nitrogen-rich soils make it a challenging plant to manage in agriculture.

This weed is commonly found in wetlands, near water bodies, ditches, and in poorly drained agricultural fields. It causes significant damage in various crops, including cereals and vegetables, especially in low-lying areas or in fields where water logging occurs after heavy rainfall, competing aggressively for nutrients and space.

The biology of amphibious bistort is characterized by a vigorous, creeping rhizome system that spreads rapidly through the soil. The plant reproduces via both seeds and vegetative fragmentation of these rhizomes. Terrestrial plants typically have hairy stems and lance-shaped leaves, producing distinct pink, spike-like inflorescences that emerge during the summer season.

The economic impact of this weed is substantial, as it outcompetes crops for resources, leading to reduced yields and lower quality of harvested produce. In infested areas, the density of the weed can be so high that it impedes the use of machinery, while its strong root system severely depletes soil fertility, affecting crop development over several seasons.

Control strategies must be integrated to be successful. Agronomic practices include improving field drainage, deep ploughing, and mechanical harrowing to fragment and destroy the rhizome network. Chemical control is highly effective when systemic herbicides are applied during the active growth phase, allowing the chemical to translocate down to the extensive rhizomes and prevent regrowth.
