Longleaf pondweed

Longleaf pondweed (Potamogeton nodosus) is a perennial aquatic plant belonging to the Potamogetonaceae family. It is characterized by long, branched rhizomes that root firmly into the substrate of water bodies. In agricultural practice, it is considered a persistent aquatic weed, particularly problematic in irrigated areas and water management systems.

This species is predominantly found in slow-moving waters, irrigation canals, and flooded fields, such as rice paddies. It thrives in stagnant or gently flowing water, where it can quickly establish dense colonies. Its ability to spread through both rhizome fragments and seeds makes it a resilient weed that can rapidly infest large areas of water supply infrastructure.

The biology of Potamogeton nodosus is highly adapted to aquatic life. It exhibits heterophylly, producing both submerged leaves and floating leaves, which allows it to optimize light absorption at various depths. Its rhizomes are capable of surviving short periods of drought, and the plant regrows vigorously as soon as water levels are restored, making eradication difficult.

The primary economic damage caused by longleaf pondweed is the obstruction of irrigation canals and drainage systems. Excessive growth reduces water flow capacity, leads to increased sedimentation, and increases the cost of maintenance for hydraulic infrastructure. In rice production, the weed competes directly with the crop, shading seedlings and consuming nutrients, which leads to significant yield losses.

Control measures require an integrated management strategy. Cultural methods include regular mechanical dredging of canals, seasonal drawdown of water levels to expose rhizomes to frost, and thorough soil tillage in dried-out fields. Chemical control involves the application of aquatic-labeled herbicides. When using chemicals, it is essential to follow local regulations to prevent contamination of water bodies and protect aquatic life.
