Blunt-leaved pondweed (Potamogeton obtusifolius) is an aquatic perennial plant belonging to the Potamogetonaceae family. It is typically found completely submerged in stagnant or slow-moving freshwater bodies. The plant spreads effectively through both vegetative growth via rhizomes and the production of specialized turions, which allow it to survive adverse environmental conditions.

In agricultural settings, this species is categorized as a significant aquatic weed. It frequently invades irrigation ditches, drainage channels, and reservoirs, where it causes logistical problems for water delivery. The species is capable of rapid expansion, which can clog hydraulic equipment essential for managing water flow to crops.

The primary economic damage caused by this weed involves the obstruction of irrigation infrastructure, leading to reduced water flow capacity and potential overflow of channels. In rice paddies, the dense mats formed by Potamogeton obtusifolius reduce the light reaching the submerged parts of the crop and disrupt nutrient cycles, ultimately leading to yield losses.

Management strategies for this weed involve mechanical control, such as dredging or using aquatic harvesters to clear canals. In irrigation systems, draining and drying the channels during the off-season is highly effective at reducing the viability of turions and rhizomes, which are sensitive to desiccation and direct solar exposure.
