Richardson's pondweed (Potamogeton richardsonii) is a member of the Potamogetonaceae family. This perennial aquatic plant is considered a significant weed in hydraulic structures, irrigation canals, and reservoirs throughout North America. It is a submerged macrophyte capable of rapid vegetative spread, which makes it a persistent nuisance in managed water environments.

The species is primarily found in freshwater habitats with both running and stagnant water. In an agricultural context, it poses a threat to rice paddies, irrigation channels, and drainage networks, where its vigorous growth obstructs water flow and significantly reduces the carrying capacity of hydraulic infrastructures.

The plant's biology is characterized by a robust rhizome system that enables it to overwinter successfully in bottom sediments. It forms dense stands that reduce light penetration for other aquatic life and accelerate the siltation of water bodies. Reproduction occurs through both seed dispersal and the fragmentation of rhizomes, which are easily transported by water currents.

The primary damage caused by Richardson's pondweed involves the drastic reduction of irrigation efficiency. Large accumulations of biomass slow down water velocity, cause canal overflow, create potential for structural damage, and hinder the delivery of water to crops, which leads to substantial economic losses in irrigated agriculture.

Control methods involve a combination of mechanical and chemical strategies. Mechanical measures include periodic canal dredging, physical removal, and drawdown (draining systems to expose roots to freezing temperatures). Chemical control involves the application of aquatic-approved herbicides, which must be managed carefully to comply with environmental regulations and protect non-target water life.
