Tricarinate pondweed (Latin Potamogeton tricarinatus) is a perennial aquatic herbaceous plant belonging to the Potamogetonaceae family. It is classified as an aquatic rhizomatous weed, thriving in freshwater ecosystems. The plant is well-known for its invasive growth pattern, often dominating shallow water bodies and irrigation infrastructure.

In agricultural practice, this species is commonly found in rice paddies, irrigation ditches, and water reservoirs. It poses a significant challenge to rice production because it forms dense, floating mats that compete with rice seedlings for vital sunlight, dissolved oxygen, and essential nutrients, ultimately leading to yield losses.

The biology of Potamogeton tricarinatus is driven by its robust vegetative reproduction. The plant spreads primarily through underground rhizomes and tubers that persist in the sediment during dry periods or unfavorable conditions. Once established, it can rapidly colonize large areas, making it a persistent nuisance that is difficult to eliminate completely.
