Raoulia

Raoulia (lat. Raoulia) is a genus of perennial herbaceous plants belonging to the Asteraceae family. These plants are typically categorized as mat-forming alpine plants that grow in dense, cushion-like colonies. While native to New Zealand's mountainous regions, they can become problematic invasive weeds in nurseries, rock gardens, and specialized horticultural settings.

In an agricultural or horticultural context, Raoulia acts as a weed by aggressively colonizing available space. It thrives in well-drained, nutrient-poor, or rocky soils, where it can quickly outcompete smaller, delicate ornamental species. Its ability to create a continuous, dense mat makes it a nuisance that effectively smothers any other vegetation attempting to establish in the same area.

The biology of Raoulia is defined by its prostrate growth habit. The stems are capable of rooting at every node whenever they touch moist soil, which makes the plant exceptionally efficient at horizontal expansion. This vegetative propagation, combined with the dispersal of wind-borne seeds, allows the plant to colonize disturbed sites rapidly.

The damage caused by Raoulia is primarily competitive. By forming a thick, compact layer of foliage and roots, it sequesters moisture and blocks sunlight from reaching the soil surface. This prevents the germination of seeds and the healthy growth of root systems of surrounding desirable plants, leading to a significant decrease in crop or ornamental vitality.

Control strategies for Raoulia involve both manual and chemical interventions. Physical removal is effective for small patches, provided that the gardener ensures the entire root system is extracted, as any remaining segments can easily regenerate. For larger infestations, systemic herbicides containing glyphosate can be used as a spot treatment; however, extreme care must be taken to prevent drift onto non-target sensitive species.
