Cup plant

Silphium perfoliatum

Description

Cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum) is a perennial member of the Asteraceae family. It is a large, hardy plant characterized by a square stem and perfoliate leaves that grow together to form a cup around the stem, where rainwater is held. While sometimes cultivated for forage or biomass, it can become a persistent weed if it escapes into agricultural fields.

Native to North America, the species thrives in moist environments, such as floodplains and riparian corridors. In agricultural settings, it acts as a disruptive weed in pastures, hay fields, and along irrigation ditches. Its ability to tolerate wet soil makes it particularly difficult to manage in low-lying, poorly drained areas of a farm.

The biology of the cup plant is defined by its robust rhizomatous root system. This perennial habit ensures that it can survive through harsh winters and rapidly regenerate in the spring. As a highly competitive species, it possesses rapid growth rates, which allow it to shade out smaller forage species or young crops in the early stages of the growing season.

The damage caused by this plant is mainly through aggressive competition. In meadows and pastures, it quickly dominates the field, decreasing the overall quality and quantity of valuable fodder. In cultivated areas, its dense stands and large size hinder the mechanical operation of equipment, making field maintenance labor-intensive and costly.

Effective control strategies require a combination of mechanical and chemical approaches:

  • Frequent mowing to prevent seed production and weaken the carbohydrate reserves in the roots.
  • Tillage operations that expose and fragment the rhizomes to dehydrate them.
  • Application of systemic herbicides, such as glyphosate, during the active vegetative growth phase.
  • Post-emergence treatment with selective growth-regulator herbicides in infested pastures to minimize regrowth.
