Unlike true parasites, this species is a hemiparasite, meaning it possesses chlorophyll and can perform photosynthesis while simultaneously tapping into the roots of host plants to obtain water and dissolved nutrients through specialized structures called haustoria.

The plant is native to North America, primarily distributed in specialized habitats such as moist, sandy pinelands and open savannas. Because of its specific ecological requirements and dependency on host species, it is rarely found in mass agricultural production. It acts as an important component of native biodiversity in its local range.

Botanically, the plant features thin, erect stems and small, narrow, needle-like leaves, which are typical adaptations for surviving in dry or sandy environments.
