Andean alder (Alnus acuminata Kunth) is a fast-growing woody species belonging to the Betulaceae family. It is widely recognized in agriculture and forestry for its exceptional capacity to restore soil nitrogen levels and produce high-quality timber in mountainous regions.
The species is native to the Andean regions of Central and South America. Its natural range extends from Mexico down through the tropical highlands of the Andes into Argentina, thriving in areas with high precipitation and cool to moderate temperatures.
Botanically, the tree exhibits a vigorous growth habit, reaching heights of 15 to 20 meters. A key biological characteristic is the presence of root nodules containing symbiotic bacteria, which facilitate biological nitrogen fixation, effectively fertilizing the soil around the tree.
