Green alder (Alnus viridis) is a deciduous shrub belonging to the Betulaceae family. Unlike its taller relatives, this species grows in dense, thicket-like clusters, typically reaching heights of two to three meters. It is widely recognized for its extreme cold tolerance and ability to thrive in challenging, high-altitude or northern environments where other woody species often struggle to establish.
Originating from the mountainous regions of Europe, Siberia, and North America, the green alder is increasingly utilized in modern agroforestry. Its primary value lies in its symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria located in root nodules. This biological process effectively converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form available for plants, making the species an excellent pioneer plant for rehabilitating impoverished soils and restoring degraded lands.
The botanical structure of green alder includes distinctive ovate leaves with serrated edges and a glossy finish. Its root system is primarily shallow but dense, creating an effective network that binds soil particles together. This characteristic makes it one of the most reliable plant species for slope stabilization and preventing erosion in mountainous regions and along disturbed terrain.
Cultivation requirements for Alnus viridis focus on moisture management and site selection. While it is remarkably undemanding regarding soil quality and can tolerate acidic conditions, it requires consistent moisture to thrive. Planting should ideally occur in early spring or autumn in well-drained but humid soils. Avoid waterlogged areas, as despite its moisture-loving nature, it still requires adequate aeration for the root system to prevent rot.
