Green alder (Alnus viridis) is a deciduous shrub species belonging to the Betulaceae family. Unlike its tree-like relatives, this species maintains a dense, bushy structure, which makes it a preferred candidate for soil stabilization and environmental management in hilly and mountainous agricultural zones.
Originating from the mountain regions of Europe, North America, and Asia, this culture is highly valued for its ability to thrive in challenging environments. It is naturally adapted to acidic, rocky soils and cold climates, where it plays a key role in ecological succession and soil nitrogen enrichment.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its multistemmed habit, reaching up to 3 meters in height. The foliage is serrated and vibrant green, while the reproductive structures consist of woody, cone-like catkins. Its root system is exceptionally robust, forming a wide network that effectively binds soil particles.
Regarding cultivation, green alder requires consistent moisture and well-drained, nutrient-poor to moderately fertile soils. It thrives in cooler climates and is resistant to heavy snow cover. Agronomic management involves site selection with moderate drainage and protection against extreme summer droughts during the establishment phase.
The plant is primarily used for slope stabilization, riparian buffer zones, and as a pioneer species in reforestation projects. Common pests include the alder leaf beetle and various aphids, while diseases such as alder rust (Melampsoridium betulinum) can affect foliage health if the plants are placed in areas with poor air circulation.
