Common ragweed (lat. Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Known as a significant agricultural weed and a potent allergen, it is considered a quarantine species in many regions due to its aggressive growth habits and extreme resilience in cropping systems.
Native to North America, common ragweed has expanded its range across Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world. It thrives in cultivated fields, particularly in row crops like corn, sunflowers, and soybeans. Because it grows rapidly and establishes a deep root system, it successfully outcompetes many crop species for essential nutrients, water, and sunlight, often leading to substantial yield losses.
The plant is characterized by its feathery, deeply lobed leaves and a highly branched stem. It typically reaches heights between 30 and 200 centimeters. The plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers in clusters, releasing vast amounts of wind-borne pollen. Its reproductive capacity is immense, with a single plant capable of producing tens of thousands of seeds that can remain dormant in the soil for decades.
Ragweed displays broad environmental adaptability, favoring disturbed soils and high-light conditions. Effective agronomic control requires an integrated approach. Standard practices include deep plowing, the use of competitive cover crops, and timely application of post-emergence herbicides. Preventing the plant from reaching the seed-setting stage is crucial to reducing the long-term soil seed bank.
Agricultural management of ragweed is a continuous challenge because it has very few natural enemies. Most pests and diseases do not affect it due to the presence of secondary metabolites that act as natural repellents. In addition to yield reduction, ragweed infestations complicate harvesting and lower the quality of silage, making integrated management essential for maintaining farm productivity.
