Description
Western ragweed (Ambrosia psilostachya DC.) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Unlike its annual counterparts, this species develops an extensive system of creeping rhizomes, which allows it to persist in agricultural lands for many years and makes mechanical eradication extremely difficult.
Native to North America, Western ragweed has successfully naturalized in many regions across the globe. It is not an agricultural crop but rather a noxious weed that threatens biodiversity and agricultural productivity. It is widely recognized as a problematic invasive plant that occupies pastures, roadsides, and cultivated fields.
The plant features stems ranging from 30 to 120 cm in height, covered in stiff, appressed hairs. The leaves are pinnately lobed and typically grayish-green. The primary botanical challenge is the underground root system, which can reach deep into the soil profile and produce new shoots from fragmented sections, facilitating rapid colonization.
Western ragweed is highly resilient, thriving in diverse soil conditions including dry, sandy, or disturbed sites. Effective agricultural management requires a multi-year strategy: combining deep tillage with competitive crop rotation and, where necessary, the application of systemic herbicides to target the root system rather than just the foliage.
