Douglas-fir dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium douglasii) is a small, obligate parasitic plant belonging to the Santalaceae family. While not a conventional agricultural crop, it acts as a significant pathogen within forestry and silviculture, primarily targeting Douglas-fir trees. Its parasitic lifestyle makes it a primary subject of study in forest pathology and ecosystem management.

The native range of this species is located in western North America. It is commonly found in mountainous regions where its host, the Douglas-fir, thrives. The plant has evolved to depend entirely on the host's vascular system, meaning its distribution is intrinsically linked to the presence and density of its specific host populations within these diverse forest environments.

Botanically, this mistletoe is characterized by its reduced structure, lacking leaves and functioning roots. Instead, it utilizes an internal system of haustoria, which are root-like structures that penetrate the tree's bark and phloem to extract nutrients and moisture. The small, yellowish-brown shoots are typically only a few centimeters long, making them difficult to detect during the early stages of infection.

The environmental requirements for this plant are governed by the needs of the host tree. It thrives in temperate forest climates where moisture and host tree vigor are sufficient for its slow but persistent growth. Management techniques involve silvicultural practices, such as removing heavily infected trees, creating buffer zones, and ensuring young stands are established at a distance from heavily infested mature trees to prevent seed dispersal.
