The native range of this species is primarily situated in the high-elevation coniferous forests of the southwestern United States. It exhibits a high degree of host specificity, with the Engelmann spruce being the most common target for its parasitic activities, effectively restricting its distribution to specific subalpine vegetation zones.

Botanically, this organism appears as a small, leafless shoot emerging from the bark of the host tree. It lacks a traditional root system, employing an endophyte system that penetrates the tree's xylem and phloem to extract water, nutrients, and photosynthates, which effectively weakens the host tree over time.

Its environmental requirements are closely aligned with the climate of mountainous regions, including moderate humidity for seed germination and specific temperature cycles. Management of this parasite in forest settings is focused on silvicultural practices, such as removing infected trees or pruning branches to prevent the explosive discharge of seeds from reaching new host specimens.
