Juniper dwarf mistletoe (Latin Arceuthobium oxycedri) is a parasitic plant species classified within the Santalaceae family. It is a highly specialized organism that exists as an obligate parasite, requiring a living juniper host to complete its life cycle and obtain necessary nutrients, including water and mineral elements.

The geographic distribution of this species spans across the Mediterranean basin, the Caucasus, and parts of Central Asia. It thrives in arid and semi-arid environments where host juniper trees are present. Its ability to colonize hosts in harsh conditions makes it a significant biological factor in the stability of certain conifer-based ecosystems.

Botanically, Arceuthobium oxycedri exhibits extreme reduction. The plant lacks functional leaves, possessing only scale-like structures along its segmented shoots. The majority of the plant's biomass exists as an endophytic system, which acts as a root-like structure penetrating the xylem and phloem of the host plant to absorb resources.

Regarding management, this plant is treated as a pathogen rather than a crop. The cultivation or propagation of dwarf mistletoe is strictly avoided in any forestry context due to its detrimental effects. Control measures primarily involve silvicultural interventions, such as the pruning of infected branches or the removal of heavily infested trees to limit the spread of seeds, which are dispersed ballistically.

Pathological impact of this species is extensive. Infested trees frequently develop symptoms such as branch swelling, wood deformation, and the formation of dense clusters known as «witches' brooms». Over time, the parasitic activity leads to significant physiological stress, reduced growth rates, and eventually the death of the affected juniper, making it a critical subject for forest health management programs.
