Unlike conventional crops, it is a significant forest pathogen that relies entirely on host conifer trees, specifically pine species, to complete its life cycle by extracting water and minerals through specialized root-like structures called haustoria.
Native to North American coniferous forests, this species is well-adapted to surviving on its hosts. It does not occupy a traditional agricultural niche, but rather functions as an aggressive agent in forest ecosystems, where its population dynamics are driven by the density and age structure of the surrounding pine stands.
Botanically, it is a small, leafless plant. Its stems are segmented and typically greenish-yellow or brownish.
