Hemlock dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium tsugense) is a parasitic flowering plant belonging to the Santalaceae family. Unlike conventional crops, this plant is a specialized pathogen that thrives as an obligate parasite, deriving its essential minerals and water directly from host trees, most commonly the western hemlock, without contributing to the ecosystem's productivity.

Native to the western regions of North America, this species has an extensive range coinciding with its primary hosts. Its habitat is defined by the cool, moist coniferous forests of the Pacific Coast, where it spreads effectively through specialized seed dispersal mechanisms that can project seeds over long distances to reach susceptible branch tissues of neighboring trees.

Botanically, Arceuthobium tsugense is characterized by its small, leafless, and segmented stems. It lacks the ability to photosynthesize effectively, relying entirely on its host. The infection process involves the penetration of host tissues by a complex root-like structure called a haustorium, which taps into the vascular system of the host tree to siphon nutrients.
