Cassia grandis

Cassia grandis, commonly known as the Pink Shower Tree or Coral Shower, is a majestic deciduous tree belonging to the Fabaceae (legume) family. Renowned for its spectacular, rose-colored floral displays, it is a significant species in tropical forestry and horticulture, often reaching heights of 15 to 30 meters in its native environment.

Native to the tropical regions of Central and South America and the Caribbean, this species thrives in lowland tropical climates with distinct wet and dry seasons. It requires consistent warmth and does not tolerate frost, making its cultivation restricted to tropical and subtropical agricultural zones where environmental conditions mimic its native range.

Botanically, the tree is characterized by its large, compound pinnate leaves and massive, woody seed pods that can measure up to 60 centimeters in length. The pods contain a sticky, dark-colored, edible pulp with a pungent aroma. The tree acts as a nitrogen fixer, which contributes significantly to soil health in agroforestry systems where it is intercropped with other species.

Agricultural management of Cassia grandis involves planting in deep, well-draining loamy soils with adequate sunlight. While mature trees are moderately drought-tolerant, seedlings require consistent irrigation and protection from strong winds. Pruning is essential in the early years to establish a strong structural scaffold, ensuring longevity and productivity of the tree.

Economically, the species is valued for its hard, durable timber and the medicinal properties of its fruit pulp, which has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It is also an excellent source of nectar for pollinators.
