Cenchrus incertus, commonly known as the common sandbur, is a resilient annual grass belonging to the Poaceae family. In agricultural settings, it is classified as a significant weed due to its aggressive growth habits and the physical damage its burrs cause to harvested crops, livestock, and machinery operators.

Originating from the Americas, this species has become naturalized across many temperate and tropical regions globally. It thrives particularly well in sandy soils and disturbed habitats, such as cultivated fields, roadsides, and coastal dunes. Its ability to colonize nutrient-poor soils allows it to outcompete native or cultivated plants in semi-arid environments.

Botanically, the plant grows in spreading mats or upright clumps, reaching heights of up to 60 centimeters. Its most distinctive feature is the spiny burr that houses the seeds. These burrs are covered in sharp, barbed bristles that break away easily from the plant. This structural adaptation facilitates dispersal via attachment to moving objects, ensuring the weed's rapid spread across agricultural landscapes.

The plant demands high sunlight exposure and thrives in warm, sandy, and well-drained soils. Agrotechnical management requires a combination of strategies: deep plowing to bury the seeds, systematic tillage, and the strategic application of herbicides during early growth stages. Since the seeds can remain viable in the soil for several years, long-term monitoring is essential to prevent re-infestation.

While Cenchrus incertus has no commercial value as a crop, it presents severe hazards in agricultural systems. The spiny burrs cause significant injury to the mouths and digestive tracts of grazing livestock, reducing their health and productivity. Furthermore, the burrs can contaminate wool and harvested grain, complicating processing and lowering the market value of the produce. Natural pests are generally ineffective at keeping populations in check, making human intervention vital.
