The longspine sandbur (Latin: Cenchrus longispinus) is a problematic annual grass belonging to the Poaceae family. In agricultural settings, it is classified as a significant weed that acts as a quarantine pest in many jurisdictions. It is notorious for its sharp, spiny burs that cause physical damage to livestock and significantly degrade the quality of agricultural products.

Native to North America, the longspine sandbur has successfully invaded various temperate and subtropical regions worldwide. Its typical habitat includes sandy soils, riverbanks, roadsides, pastures, and cultivated fields. Its ecological success is attributed to its high tolerance for poor soil fertility and low moisture levels, allowing it to thrive where other plants might struggle.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its prostrate or ascending stems, growing up to 60 centimeters tall. The most distinguishing feature is its spiny bur, which encases the seeds. These burs are equipped with rigid, sharp spines that easily pierce animal skin and human clothing. This adaptation is highly effective for seed dispersal, as the burs are easily transported over long distances by animals and farm machinery.

From an agronomic perspective, the longspine sandbur thrives in full sun and well-drained sandy or loamy soils. It is remarkably drought-tolerant, outcompeting crops for water and nutrients during dry spells. Effective management involves a combination of strategies, including the use of clean seeds, rigorous field scouting, deep tillage, and the strategic application of pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides before the burs mature.

The economic impact of this weed is largely negative. It causes direct injury to livestock by embedding its burs in the mouth, tongue, and hide of grazing animals, leading to infections and reduced weight gain. Furthermore, it renders wool and hides unmarketable. While no major biological control agents significantly suppress its population, integrated weed management remains the only viable path to protecting crop yields and animal welfare.
