Field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.) is a persistent perennial vine belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. It is recognized globally as a major agricultural pest due to its deep and extensive root system. These roots can penetrate several meters into the soil profile, making the plant exceptionally drought-tolerant and difficult to eradicate using standard mechanical methods.
Originating in the temperate regions of Europe and Asia, field bindweed has successfully colonized almost every region where agriculture is practiced. Its ability to thrive in diverse environments allows it to compete aggressively with row crops, cereals, and orchards. By twining around the stems of cultivated crops, it shades the plants and competes for essential water and soil nutrients.
Botanically, the plant features arrowhead-shaped leaves and funnel-shaped flowers, typically white or light pink in color. The vine growth habit allows it to climb over structures and crops alike. A single plant produces numerous seeds that remain viable in the soil for decades, creating a persistent seed bank that challenges long-term agricultural planning.
The success of bindweed is tied to its high phenotypic plasticity and the ability to store vast energy reserves in its rhizomes.
