Ground morning glory

Convolvulus sabatius Viv.

Description

Ground morning glory (lat. Convolvulus sabatius) is a trailing perennial plant belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. Prized for its elegant, low-growing habit and profuse flowering, this species serves as an excellent decorative groundcover and is widely used in hanging baskets and containers to create a cascading effect.

The plant originates from the Mediterranean region, specifically native to Italy and Northern Africa. Being adapted to the Mediterranean climate, it thrives in dry, rocky soils and requires high levels of sun exposure to maintain its vigor. In regions with freezing winters, it is typically managed as an annual or overwintered indoors in pots to prevent frost damage to the delicate root system.

Botanically, this semi-shrub features thin, flexible stems that spread horizontally, often reaching lengths of up to 60 cm. The foliage consists of small, round, greyish-green leaves that provide an attractive backdrop for the flowers. The blooms are distinctively funnel-shaped, typically showcasing soft shades of blue or lavender, and remain open primarily during sunny daylight hours.

Cultivation success relies heavily on soil conditions; the plant strictly requires fast-draining, sandy, or rocky soil. Waterlogging is the primary cause of decline, making proper drainage essential for long-term survival. Maintenance practices include moderate watering intervals, infrequent but consistent fertilization during the active growing season, and occasional pruning to prevent the stems from becoming sparse or overly woody.

In landscape applications, ground morning glory is favored for its ability to cover slopes, line garden paths, or soften the edges of stone walls. Regarding health management, the plant is relatively robust but may face issues such as powdery mildew in humid, stagnant conditions or spider mites during prolonged dry spells. Ensuring proper air circulation and monitoring moisture levels are key strategies for effective pest and disease control.
