Hollyberry cotoneaster

Cotoneaster bullatus

Description

Hollyberry cotoneaster (lat. Cotoneaster bullatus) is a robust deciduous shrub belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is widely recognized in professional horticulture for its unique, deeply veined foliage and its vivid, ornamental fruit displays that add color to the garden during the autumn season.

Originating from Western and Central China, this species has become a staple in temperate landscaping across Europe and North America. It is prized for its hardy nature, displaying high tolerance to urban pollution, which makes it an excellent choice for city parks, roadside plantings, and residential hedgerows.

The botanical characteristics of this shrub include its large, wrinkled leaves with a distinct "blistered" appearance. During late spring, the plant produces clusters of small, white-pink flowers. As the season progresses into autumn, these blossoms are replaced by abundant, bright red berries that remain on the branches, providing a significant food source for birds and an attractive visual element.

Regarding cultivation, the hollyberry cotoneaster thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is not highly specific about soil types, although it performs best in well-drained, fertile loams. Standard maintenance tasks include light pruning to maintain the desired shape and occasional deep watering during the first few growing seasons to ensure proper root establishment in drier climates.

When considering landscape usage, this shrub is versatile enough to serve as a specimen plant, a dense hedge, or part of a mixed border. While generally resilient, the plant can occasionally be susceptible to common issues such as aphids or leaf spot diseases. Keeping the plant vigorous through proper spacing and regular sanitation pruning is the best strategy for maintaining health and aesthetic value over many years.
