Henry's Cotoneaster

Henry's Cotoneaster (lat. Cotoneaster henryanus) is an impressive evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its graceful, arching branches and glossy, leathery leaves that provide year-round interest to a garden landscape.

The species originates from Central and Western China, where it thrives in diverse mountain habitats. Over the years, it has been widely adopted in temperate gardening regions due to its ability to adapt to various soil types and its relative hardiness once fully established in the landscape.

Botanically, this shrub is characterized by its vigorous growth habit, reaching heights of up to 3–4 meters. Its foliage is dark green and pubescent on the underside, while the spring season brings an abundance of small, white flowers. In late summer and autumn, the plant produces clusters of vibrant red fruits, which are highly attractive to local bird species.

Regarding agrotechnical requirements, Henry's Cotoneaster prefers sunny positions with well-draining, fertile soil. It is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from consistent moisture during the initial planting stages. The shrub is remarkably tolerant of pruning, making it an excellent candidate for formal hedges or large-scale shrub borders.

Pest and disease management is generally straightforward. While the plant is robust, gardeners should be vigilant for common issues such as aphids, spider mites, or fire blight in humid conditions. Proper spacing to ensure adequate air circulation and regular seasonal feeding will promote vigorous growth and a high level of disease resistance.
