It is a traditional cereal crop primarily cultivated in the West African savanna regions, specifically across parts of Nigeria, Togo, and Benin. Often referred to as a type of millet, it holds significant nutritional and cultural importance for local communities who have relied on its hardiness for generations.
The plant is native to the highland areas of West Africa, particularly the Jos Plateau in Nigeria. Its adaptation to these regions is remarkable, as it thrives in environments that often prove challenging for other staple crops. Iburu prefers tropical climates characterized by distinct dry and wet seasons, demonstrating an excellent capacity to manage periods of irregular rainfall throughout its life cycle.
