This massive, evergreen tree is highly valued in its native range of Southeast Asia for its impressive height, which can reach up to 50 meters, and its significant contributions to regional forest ecosystems.

The native distribution area of this species encompasses the tropical forests of Bangladesh, Myanmar, India, and Thailand. It thrives in high-rainfall regions and is well-adapted to alluvial soils that offer adequate drainage. As a tropical crop, it is sensitive to cold temperatures and requires consistently warm, humid environmental conditions for optimal growth.

Botanically, the species is characterized by its distinctively smooth, greyish bark and large, leathery leaves that form a dense canopy. The tree produces winged fruits, allowing for efficient seed dispersal. Additionally, the tree produces a medicinal oil known as Gurjun balsam.
