Goldie's wood fern

Goldie's wood fern (Dryopteris goldiana) is a large, robust perennial fern belonging to the Dryopteridaceae family. It is highly regarded by gardeners and landscape designers for its grand scale and architectural foliage, making it a standout specimen in shaded environments.

This fern is native to the deciduous forests of eastern North America. It naturally thrives in moist, cool, and rich woodland soils, often found in deep ravines or bottomlands where the humidity remains high and the canopy provides constant, dappled shade.

The botanical structure of the fern features a thick, creeping rhizome that supports wide, upright fronds reaching up to 4 feet in height. The foliage is broadly ovate, composed of pinnae that have a distinctively vibrant green hue. Unlike some smaller ferns, this species displays a strong, structural presence in the landscape.

Cultivation success depends on providing the right environment: deep, fertile, moisture-retentive soil enriched with organic matter. The site should be located in full to partial shade, sheltered from harsh, drying winds.
