Enneapogon avenaceus, commonly known as the bottle-washer grass, belongs to the Poaceae family. As a highly specialized agricultural grass, it has garnered interest for its remarkable ability to thrive in challenging environments where conventional fodder crops fail to establish.

This grass is native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Australia. Its range of cultivation is defined by low annual rainfall and intense thermal stress, making it an essential component of the natural ecosystem in these landscapes. It is uniquely adapted to thrive in harsh, nutrient-poor soils where other vegetation struggles to persist.

Botanically, it is a tufted, perennial or annual grass with slender, linear leaves and distinct bottlebrush-like inflorescences. The stems are relatively short, typically reaching heights between 20 and 50 centimeters. A key feature is the presence of nine-awned lemmas, which gives the genus its name and helps in seed dispersal and moisture retention during dry cycles.

Regarding cultivation, Enneapogon avenaceus prefers well-drained, sandy, or gravelly substrates. It demands full sun exposure and is highly intolerant of shade. Standard agrotechnical practices focus on low-disturbance management, as the plant relies on natural seed banking to maintain population density over time. It is exceptionally tolerant of soil salinity and prolonged periods of drought.

The primary agricultural use is as a grazing fodder for livestock, providing essential nutrients in regions with limited vegetation. Farmers should be aware of several limiting factors and typical challenges:
