Reed sweet-grass (Latin: Glyceria maxima) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. It is recognized in agriculture as a highly productive forage crop specifically adapted to wet, waterlogged soils where traditional grasses cannot establish themselves effectively.
Originating from temperate regions of Eurasia, this species has spread across many parts of the globe, including North America, where it is often found in riverine ecosystems and marshy habitats. Its agricultural range is defined by areas with high water tables, making it a strategic choice for farming in reclaimed wetlands.
Botanically, this grass is characterized by robust rhizomes and tall stems that can grow up to two meters high. It features wide, light-green leaves and a large, spreading panicle inflorescence. This structure allows the plant to form dense, monocultural stands that can outcompete many weeds in hydric environments.
The cultivation requirements are centered on soil moisture management. It thrives in soils that remain saturated throughout the growing season and can even tolerate partial submergence. Agrotechnical management involves regular cutting to prevent the plant from becoming too fibrous, which ensures the maintenance of high protein content in the forage.
The primary agricultural use is for livestock grazing and hay production, particularly in flood-prone regions. Beyond its role as feed, the crop is used for bio-filtration of wastewater and coastal stabilization.
