The nectacotum is a specialized interspecific hybrid resulting from the cross-breeding of Prunus salicina (Japanese plum) and Prunus persica (peach). Belonging to the Rosaceae family, this crop represents a significant achievement in stone fruit breeding. It is designed to combine the smooth skin and intense flavor of a nectarine with the vigor and hardiness of certain plum varieties, offering a distinct product for the consumer market.

Originating from directed breeding programs, this hybrid was developed to expand the cultivation range of peaches into cooler climates. Its natural habitat for successful cultivation includes regions with temperate climates, characterized by sufficient summer heat and protection from extreme mid-winter frost. The crop thrives in areas where stone fruits generally perform well, provided specific environmental requirements are met.
